At 7:30pm, we went back to the theatre. We found our seats, which were the front center of the third tier. The view was excellent but the comfort...well let's say that even the skinny people were complaining about the lack of room. Even my legs were cramped!
The theatre was so much smaller than I pictured. about the same size as Syracuse Stage it seemed. The stage was framed in a Mormon Temple outline. I knew it was going to be good. And from the very first song, it was. The plot was funny, the songs were great and the actors hilarious.
By intermission, I knew Todd was hooked when he told me I could buy the CD and the program. :)
Some of the songs really pushed the boundary, but really, the topics addressed were important. White missionaries thinking they have the answers for Africans who face way more than most of us can imagine. One of my favorite scenes is when some of the missionaries sing "Turn it Off". Basically, the guy was gay but he had learned that "neat Mormon trick" to turn it off "like a light switch". And "I Believe" "....because that's what Mormons do. I believe that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people i...so you can be a Mormon and Just believe!" OK, maybe we listened to the songs a few times since :)
Best show I ever saw.
Afterwards, we decided to hit up Mexican place on the way back to the hotel. We ordered the margarita drink special...five bucks for the most God awful drink I ever had. Todd ordered a "real" one that cost $10 and it was much better. He got steak fajitas and I got steak tacos, which were pretty good. The restaurant was set up in a way I had only heard about in New York magazine...long tables that you basically share with other people. Seemed weird at first, but you kind of get used to it.
Then we could never get our waiter.
Then we asked him twice for a check, the second time he seemed confused and asked us if we wanted to order food. Then the white bartender asked us if we needed drinks. No, just our check.
Then it came. It was for $20. Our two crappy margaritas and Todd's decent one. We left $50. The guy either figured out his mistake or got one hell of a tip.
We walked back and it was after midnight. Usually, we are asleep by then. It was such a great night. We love doing stuff with the kids, but us time was clearly "short" since we had Adam so quickly. It was very romantic of Todd to do something that I love and show an interest in it just because of me. ( I think I'm winning him over, though. :) And there really is something romantic about NYC for some reason. Walking the streets full of people and lights, it seemed like it was just us. Not too many of those moments with the A-team :)!!!! One of the best "dates" I've ever had.
Sounds awesome. Last time I was there with Brian we had drinks in a tower that slowly rotated around in a circle overlooking the city. We only had drinks (I think I had one and Brian had two) and the bill was outrageous when we left. Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteHow romantical! :) I haven't been to the city since I saw Beauty and the Beast in HS. <3 Jackie
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling you and Todd might be making this an annual thing... Glad you had so much fun!!
