Natural History Museum

A few weeks before our trip, we thought that perhaps a trip to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs would be a good idea. Adam has been obsessed for two years and he shows no sign of waning in his affection. After breakfast, Todd put it to me to hail a cab. We ended up crossing the street and walking up a few blocks, but I got one (this was a task I usually left to Tammy in my previous travels). It was raining again, so thankfully we decided walking wouldn't do....after getting there, we realized how FAR it was! The cab driver was friendly and he let us off in front of the museum, where there was a line for opening at 10 am. We got inside after a cursory diaper bag search and I got in line for tickets as Todd and Bobby stayed with the kids. This was Adam "WOW BRONTE!" He was in love! While not as taken as Adam, Abbey was really into looking at them and all the people, complaining if you got in her way :) The ticket line wasn't too bad, but then I had to take both kids in to the bathroom to change diapers, poor Bobby went through the coat check line three times (mine and Bobby's coats the first time, after realizing that we did need the strollers the second time and the third time when we realized how hot it was so went everyone else's coats!) We finally got going.... right off we saw some elephants in the African animals room. This shows you how successful I was most of the day trying to get Adam to pose with anything :) Monkeys Mama!!! Everywhere he went, he saw animals he loved. I didn't get a photo, but the penguins in the bird room just plain captured him. I should note, that before we even got to the animal rooms, we went through some cultural rooms of Africa and Asia and because we had told him he was going to see dinosaurs, anything that remotely looked like a dinosaur, he roared at or named...like a fighting helmet he decided was a two-toppy. Then we took him to the top floor for the dinosaurs. The kid couldn't have been happier at Disney. "Baby dinosaurs Mom!" Two-toppy!! Mommy and Baby Dinosaur, according to Adam. Couldn't get enough... He was pretty irritated and impatient with the ret of us when we took a moment to sit in this area off of the display floor. Got my NYC view. Abbey liked the museum, but she wasn't excited. She didn't smile much, she wanted to see everything but she didn't yell, either. Except in the crowded elevator. She hates them. So a highlight for Adam was that there was a sabre tooth tiger, or "Diego" from Ice Age (which I didn't get a photo of and every time Adam looks at these photos he asks for one...of course) and Manny, the mamouth from Ice Age. He was beside himself when he saw this. He actually ran out to the next room and came back and tried to climb up to "Hug Manny". The statue underneath he declared was the baby.
BRONTE! Adam was too excited...this is actually a Bronchosaurous, but we told Adam it was a Brontesaourous when he picked it out for his 2nd birthday...so Bronte it became....he ran in, saw this, ran back to Manny and came back again. He was in love. Shark Mommy! He was all over the place... Pteradactyl Mom! (Though I think this was the Teranadon). Our last dinosaur room... REXY MOM!!!!! Baby Stegasourous Mom! Adam really liked this guy for some reason. Grabbed some better shots of the lobby on our way out. We had hit an amphbian room before we left, but I didn't get any photos. As we were leaving, after a couple of hours, all of us tired and having seen quite a bit, Todd remunated that he hadn't seen Teddy Roosevelt, from NIght at the Museum movie of course. But here he was...out front! I had noted in the lobby that the museum was opened in the 1930's and dedicated to the first Roosevelt. And Uncle Bobby had said the one meal he wanted in NYC was a hot dog from a cart. Happy to accomodate right outside the museum! I wanted a pretzel, but it kind of sucked. The kids barely ate it. We grabbed a cab to go back to the hotel and boy, did we get the NYC cab experience. A guy yelling into his blue tooth in a Middle Eastern tongue, missing our street and ignoring our directions. But we got back!

  1. Oh, I love this. It must have been so great to show Adam something that he loved and then see him react just the way you wanted him to. Sweet.
