Yesterday was my long anticipated girl date day with Melissa. Just before 11 am, I was sitting with Abbey letting her drink her bottle before nap. In the bathroom in the center of the house, they were putting in a new floor, so I had thought I should try and put her to sleep in Adam's room as her room is adjacent to that bathroom. As I got up, Bailey starting barking like crazy, Bobby arrived and Melissa. I stuck her in crib since the center of the house erupted! It took me like ten mintues to get Bailey to calm down and Bobby pointed out Abbey was NOT asleep and the floor guy had started hammering.
So I went in there to take her out and stick her Adam's room, thinking it might be the best choice to get her to sleep. I peeked in and she was talking to her Mickey. I went in to pick her up and when she saw me, she thought she was in trouble and quickly laid her head down, sticking it under the blanket! It was so cute. Abbey girl is 14 months going on 14 years old!!!

Tammy Time
Often, Tammy is behind the camera these days instead of in front of it, even volunteering to capture special events, so I don't have a ton of recent photos of her. This one I took last June. She came out for a couple of days to help me cope mentally when I found out my Dad was dying. It's in Friendly's and afterwards we took the kids to the Imagination Station park for the first time. A few weeks later, she came to my Dad's memorial, taking some photos of the military piece I never thought I'd want but am so glad she did.
In September catching lunch at Mimi's after her Grandmother's health took a turn for the worse. Fortunately, she is doing much better now.
My brother checking her out at Adam's 2nd birthday. He's been in love for a long time.
She joined us for trick-or-treating around the block, taking photos. I snuck one of her when she walked Adam up to his last house.
Miss Tammy was in town for Easter so I got my brother to babysit and took her for a lunch on Monday, just us. It's very hard to talk when I'm checking on two kids all the time and some girl time was in order. (Now that the A-team is older, I can actually leave for a few hours and not panic! ha) I hadn't eaten at an Indian restaurant in years so we went to a buffet in Liverpool, like old times.
Later that night she stopped in to use our internet connection, as her parents actually DO NOT have any! She packed up around 10:30pm as she heard us yawning in the other room. Times have changed!
Tammy has a lot going on as she transitions from one part of her life to the next step. Change is hard, harder for me anyhow as I get older anyhow. But she is doing it and doing it well. All I have to do is look back at the past year, as these photos show, to see how much Tammy is there for me and my family. I think she knows we are here for her if she should ever need us. Miss her and hope to see her again soon.

Big Girl Abbey
Back Room
A couple of week ago when bathroom renovation was full swing, Todd and Kevin decided to dive right into the back room. Remember this photo? This is the before....it wasn't usually this crowded, but it was heaped with stuff from the bathroom project.
I had a teeny tiny panic over how we were going to get all the crap out and find places for it in a day. But we managed...first the dressers in the kitchen.
The closets in the dining room. We are getting rid of that metal closet and getting some more white units to use as storage in the back so that everything can be put away. I am very excited at that prospect!
After the floor leveling and a fresh coat of paint.
Standing in the kitchen door.
With the new linoleum! We just picked from what they had in stock...I like it, it's a nice grey stone look that will hide dirt from shoes and the bird! That corner by the window has Orrie's name on it :)
Tomorrow, Kevin comes back after a week and a half. The baseboards will be put back in and this is when we tell him we decided we want crown molding, too. After he is done, we will set about deciding what exactly goes back in and what we put it in. Besides the dining room and kitchen, there are odds and ends stored in the front foyer off our bedroom and stuff in our bedroom. We decided we must be HERDERS (or Hoarders, whichever the case may be!).
And they also rip out the bathroom in the center of the house tomorrow. Big day! And where the heck will Abbey take her nap???? I might have to hit the road!

Adam's Mobile
It's no secret Adam was a big strong boy from the start. He lifted his head up to look at me when he was in the hospital! When he was six months old, not quite even, he ripped down his animal mobile I had picked out so carefully while pregnant, imaging my son enjoying it as he lie cooing in his bed. Ha. Adam got a wicked grin and ripped it down, actually SNAPPING the plastic arm that held it up. I was kind of upset, not at him of course, but just that my beloved nursery was broken. (HAHA Now I know it's par for the course!) Todd looked online, but it was not to be fixed or replaced. I tucked it away behind the crib.
With all the stuff we are doing around here, I am trying to get rid of stuff. I pulled it out to toss away. I have found that taking a picture of things that are broken but I am sentimental about helps me to get over it. One of the few useful tips actually on all those HGTV shows. As I laid it out to take my photo, Adam came in, instantly taken with the five animals on it! He really wanted them!
So I cut them off and he played with them....
Of course, Abbey came along and wanted it.
He gathered them up and spent the next two days hoarding them, even napping with them. He tried to share with Abbey. He would offer her one when prompted and then struggle with wanting it back. It actually made me proud of him because I know he does a lot better than the average two year old with this.
He is over this obsession, but it is so Adam. He gets really into something and very focused on it. He becomes enthralled and obsessed. And once he's got it or learned it, he can let go of the obsession. The hoarding is kind of funny...sometimes he ends up being "over" something because he hoards it and hides it from Abbey so well he forgets! (Usually behind Daddy's chair!) Some obsessions he never lets go of....like his dinosaurs...but that's a different post! You can't always tell by looking at our son when he loves something because he's focused, like in these photos, not grinning...like Abbey!

First Bath for My Babes
On Sunday when I went to start a bath for the A-team, Todd asked if I was going to use the new tub. I hadn't yet gotten the room situated and I was wondering how Adam would react seeing his adverse reaction to the other tub. I needn't have worried. He was excited! They loved it. I really like that that the sides are higher, which makes it safer, and is less of a slippery surface. Also, the faucet is higher, so I don't have to worry about them turning on the water on their own. This pictures are pretty cute, if I do say so myself!
Of course, Adam was trying to press the jet button, which at first concerned me but the more I thought about it, the more I knew after he did it once, it wouldn't happen again. He hates water blowing at him. I was right!
And finally a picture where they are BOTH looking at me :) Well, kind of.

Details of the Bathroom
The sconce...or L-shaped light...by the back door. I went back and fourth between Lowe's like five times, no joke, to find the right light fixtures we both liked, fit the space and matched.
Kevin was nice enough to paint the heat register black. I love this detail.
Toilet paper holders are no longer really made of metal. Nor faucets. Hmph. But I think it goes well with the bathroom!
Sink faucet.
Detail on the linen cabinet, same ones on the cabinets over the washer/dryer and the vanity.
Ceiling light.
Bathtub faucet.

The Big Reveal....The Bathroom!!!!
Here it is! The new bathroom. Of course, there is still finishing touches...shower curtain, curtains, hampers. I took these pictures Saturday night before I had even moved our stuff in. This is the view from the old secret bathroom door.
The new toilet area, to the right of the main entrance. The flush is pretty hot on this thing ;)
View when standing in front of the toilet in front of the vanity and mirror. Yes, it is NOTHING like my original version. And we spaced the linen cabinet over for a more spacious feel and also to cover the holes made from the original placement of the washer/dryer :)
Bailey enjoying the view :) The Victorian style goes a lot better with the floor and walls than I thought they would and the cabinet color really pulls things together, I think.
Yeah, i took two baths on Sunday...my tub is awesome!
View from the main door....the washer and dryer are SO much better in the corner!! In the first plan, we were going to stick a counter there but the washer and dryer took up the WHOLE room in the other place. They stick out just an inch in the adjacent back doorway, but barely notice it.
The crown molding needs to be installed when Kevin gets back from his vacation after Easter. I LOVE this bathroom...Todd does, too. The kids love that they can now go in a circle to the back room, kitchen, dining room and bathroom. The next post, I'll have detail shots because Lord knows no one can get enough of my bathroom :)
Adam's First Video Game
Last weekend, Todd decided it was time for Adam to try his first video game. Todd was kind of computer game geek growing up :). He had a Commodore Vic 20 for God's sake! And used to talk about being a systems analyst before he decided to "slack off" and run his own business at age 20. He doesn't play often now...Todd has no time, but when he does he gets right back into the zone. One of his favorite all-time games is Punch-Out, an old Nintendo game that we downloaded onto my Wii. We gave Adam a controller and boy, he loved it! It's cute when they are young and they really think they are doing it!
Then he put on Ms. Pac-Man, which we also downloaded (yeah, we're old!!) and happens to be one of my all-time favorites. It is one of the few games I am really good at it. When we lived at the Ronald McDonald house years ago, my Dad taught me and we used to sit in the kitchen there and play late at night.
It will be fun to all play together as they get older!
Bathroom in Progress and Back Room Re-Do Begins
Last week was third week of work on the bathroom. Kevin got the plumbing ready for the original location of the washer and dryer.
Then, Todd and Kevin decided that we mine as well empty out the back room so that Kevin and a helper could bring the floor up and level and paint and then have the floor people come in (they are here right now, actually). So...we had a day and half to get rid of all this (It isn't usually this bad, but when we cleaned out the secret bathroom we put stuff here temporarily!)
Then our cabinets arrived on Tuesday...all but the vanity. We ordered this from Home Depot after having no luck with Lowe's and Burkes being out of this world too expensive.
And then...the washer and dryer were moved. I hated it. It took up half the room. I didn't know what to say. Then when Todd got home I heard him in the back saying What the....! And I knew I wasn't alone!
He called Kevin and we decided it had to be moved. I loved the cabinets when I saw them anyhow!

Adam and Thomas
I so wish I had my camera outside today. I took Adam out while Abbey was sleeping and I brought his ride-along Thomas. He had the time of his life, scooting it around the corner and half-way down each block. When I told him to turn around to go back, he'd get the Todd sparkle in his eye and scoot backwards...it's the Adam trait. He won't do what I tell him not to (which is to keep going) but VERY specifically he finds a way around the literal words.
He noticed the flowers in our yard and jumped off his Thomas, "parking" it and exclaiming flowers! flowers over and over and bending down to "sniff" them. He picked up sticks and loaded them onto Thomas. There was a ball of dirt on the sidewalk and he leaned over to poke it, going POOH Mommy. I told him no, it isn't, but if it were, he shouldn't touch it! He rounded out the morning by running around the contractor's truck pointing to the different letters. Right now, as he tries to "spell", every letter is "E" :)

Abbey Is a Big Girl
Abbey is growing up so fast. Not even 14 months, she says hi and bye on the phone, changes the channel with the remote and climbs on and off of everything...including the center of the dining room table all this week! I turn around and turn back and BAM she is standing right in the center with Adam going AB-Bay! Totally telling on her...until last night, when he joined her.
She grins when she figures something out...like the other day there was one empty bottle on the table and she went and tracked down another and placed it next to it, turning to me and flashing the mega-watt smile that makes hearts melt.
She's not as into the bottle as Adam and I decided to start with taking away the one in the morning. She has only been drinking a couple ounces of it. So I put formula in a sippy cup this morning and handed it to her and say her down with me. She took one sip. Thought about it. Almost took more, instead threw it to the ground, laughed at me and wiggled to get down. Guess she was more than ready!
Her teeth are FINALLY starting to come in. She had just the two on the bottom for months and months and now she has eight in various stages of coming in. So cute!
She loves me so much I know but she is Daddy's princess for sure...running to him when he is near and crying when he walks away.

Adam's Affection
The last few days, Adam has decided he loves Abbey's puppy. This is a pink dog that sings the alphabet and does body parts that Jenn Moran sent as a gift. Adam has always been fascinated with this since it arrived...but now he is in LOVE with it. He hugs it and sits it in his chair and actually covers it with his monkey blanket (first time he's ever done that). And yesterday he said clear as a bell puppy! And hugged it. Cute. Abbey doesn't seem to mind sharing. He even took it to bed one night, but I was sure to inform him that Abbey was sharing it. He has passing fascination with a lot of her babies/animals and will sneak them into his crib (like her girl monkey) which is funny, because he won't add to his repertoire of five animals in the bed of his own!
Yesterday morning he got up before Abbey for a change and when she got up she was a little sad. He piled his "monkeys" on her one by one (the five animals he sleeps with) and even handed her his monkey blanket. My heart melted as he looks after her. I can hand him a bottle or a snack in the car now and he will almost always happily give it to her. Don't get me wrong...he still shoved her like 8 times this week over his Mr. Potato Head!

A Very Honest Look at Myself
I've been getting up before 7am and showering the last three weeks so I can be all done up by the time contractors get here. I've fussed with my hair to make it look as decent as possible and put on make-up. I have ditched the sweats and put on bras that hurt. All the stuff I do when I go out in public, but by 4pm today I felt exhausted with this version of myself. I was never the fussy type that had to be all done up, but as I get older and I feel like I have to make-up for more, including a deflated post-baby belly that makes my old roll seem like a fond memory. I don't want to be beautiful, I just want to look in the mirror and be OK with what I see. But at 4pm, I took my hair down, washed my face, putting on a comfortable bra and t-shirt with sweats and felt..more like myself.
I don't mind looking older, I really don't. I was always someone who neither hated nor loved her looks. I knew I was pretty enough to attract a guy or two and didn't want to rely on looks to get me ahead in life, but I guess now I don't feel public OK without these steps. I don't know how I feel about that.

First Look at My Dream Tub & Floor!!
I never wavered on my black and white floor. I had always wanted one in the kitchen and when Todd suggested I do it in the bathroom, I thought it was a great idea. It finally went in Wednesday morning. Thursday, Bobby came so I could go over to Lowe's and pay for the tub surround and pick up the tub. Kevin met me there and took them both home. Here it is how it looks now.
View from inside the main bathroom door.
Right outside the main bathroom door. Don't you just want to get into my new tub?? The toilet will be in the little nook to the right.
The facets took more than you would think. On Thursday, I stayed in Lowe's looking at paint colors (Todd was working and I couldn't find Tammy on the phone so I was forced to sort through actually making a decision alone! Yikes, I need to get more confident in this)and faucets. I talked to Todd and he said antique bronze which I thought meant almost the black ones. Luckily, Kevin didn't get to it Thursday as we realized that a brushed nickel finish went better with our Victorian sink. I dragged the kids Friday morning, exchanged them and brought them back home and then drove the kids to Erin's parent's house in Scriba (in a twist of fate, home renovations have them moved out). I came back and Kevin told the faucet was some type of plastic. What? I got unreasonably upset, convinced I couldn't make the right choice. I called Todd, who reassured me that no, it wasn't the end of the world. Apparently many of them are made this way. But, when you pay a lot, you want the real thing. I've always been like that...wanting the real thing. And when it comes to home stuff, my Dad was fanatical. Guess it's one obsessive thing I can trace to a source!

Bathroom Update...from Tuesday...
By request...:) On Tuesday morning, Kevin did this nice ceiling. I wasn't sure at first, but now I really like it. The Sheetrock was all up and not much else, I think he just wanted to get it done!
The floor people come on Tuesday afternoon to put down the luen, which I finally learned is a think sheet of plywood that they put the linoleum on. They were originally going to come on Wednesday, but got here Tuesday at 12:50pm. Leaving at 4ish, they had had yet to lay my floor, but I was told they'd be back first thing to do it You can really see the wall Kevin built that will separate the tub and toilet. The woman working on it was irritated I think I took photos! Ha.
This is the full view once I walked in from the secret bathroom doorway.
On Monday, we decided to have Burke's order us a vanity and linen cabinet. Then when Kevin went down there Tuesday morning, they weren't helpful and Todd started looking elsewhere. When we got the estimate Wednesday morning, I was not interested in it. Like $1,800 and we're not talking custom and also like 4 weeks at least. I don't think so. We went crazy Wednesday night and ordered some Victorian inspired pieces from Home Depot. Can't wait to see them in person...! The floor was laid on Wednesday and Kevin came back on Thursday and Friday and now the tub is in...I'll do that post later today...

Adam in April
Today I put a piece of pizza down in front of Adam for lunch and he looked up at me and pure grinned. Like unplanned joy. Never saw that for a food item that's for sure! That grin is awesome.
Late last week, Adam decided he could open the screen doors. i discovered this when I heard him yelling Abbey when I was in the kitchen, ran into the dining room and saw he had let her out the door. Nice. Yesterday, he strolled over to the bathroom door which had been shut and the source of curiosity during all this renovation and opened it, no problem.
Two nights ago, he decided he wanted to go to bed with his Rexy...a plastic soft foam thing with big teeth and scales. I decided to let him, though I don't usually let him take toys. Last night, I put him into bed and he started shaking his head. He hadn't forgotten he roared for Rexy. Just now before nap time, I saw him round up Rexy and Abbey's monkey...which he had pilfered once last week for nap time and sneak them into his crib when he didn't think I'd notice and when I put him in I could see he wanted to know what I was going to do. I told him that was Abbey's monkey, but he could borrow it. *sigh* she never got her stuffed Bullseye back this way!
Last night, he got out his ling ling duck toy and decided to make him fly (he has a cape) out the dining room window. It's a good thing I stopped him because I'm pretty sure he was willing to put his strength into it!
And suddenly on Saturday, after I put a few of his trucks in the tub, he climbed in instead of yelling and crying like he had all week because he was in a different tub. Yesterday after breakfast he even took me into the room for a bath. Today, however, for whatever reason after a couple of minutes he seemed to remember he hated it and started yelling to get out. Who knows???
There was one other thing ....I can't remember...oh yeah...I was using the dustpan and brush which are a turquoise color around the edges of the dining room and Adam grabbed the green hairbrush and started doing the same thing. Pretty cute....is he clever or weird?? haha PS he didn't really get any dirt the brush is fine!

Bathroom Update
Last Thursday, the sheet rock was going up. View from Secret Bathroom door to the left...
This is the right hand corner from that doorway, where I took the photo in the last entry with the large planks. Notice the blue sheet rock...it is mold resistant and on almost the whole bathroom except one wall which had to be covered in thinner material.
So I snuck in a view from the main door...that's Kevin on the ladder and you can see the frame work for the wall that separate the toilet from the new tub.
The sheet rock is up and Kevin and his dad has been doing all the finish work on it since then...it requires a couple coats of patching and sanding. He has also re-routed the plumbing and the heat vent and wired for new lighting over the new sink area and laundry areas. Todd and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the vanity/linen closet issue. We just couldn't find anything we needed, so Burke's is going to order something for us. We will match it with the cabinets in the laundry area, too. Today the floor is going in....!

Wednesday March 30th
By Wednesday, the new insulation was going in. Turned out that the main bathroom wasn't even insulated and the secret bathroom was all moldy and falling a part. So almost ALL the Sheetrock came down and what insulation there was did, too. So besides the ceiling and the corner that juts out, it all come down! This is standing in the doorway of the secret bathroom aiming towards the corner.
This is a close-up because I thought the old wood planks used to build this back "addition" (which mostly began as a porch) were cool.
Still standing in the secret bathroom doorway, but facing to the left...can see the window in the main bathroom.
And stepping into the doorway and facing all the way left...you can see the last of the old wallpaper border and the door to the main bathroom. And underneath, old wainscoting...which is why the walls mysteriously jutted out in the main bathroom. Kevin is covering that one wall with a think layer of Sheetrock to even it out. If I enter through that while the kids are up...they go nuts to get in!
On Monday, Adam did not nap, not surprising considering his bedroom is off the dining room, as is the bathroom and Kevin was doing major demo, including sawing a tub in half to get it out! But he has been fine since. His fan seems to blend over the noise that has been made. On Wednesday when he woke up, Bailey was with me excited and I thought it would be fun to put her in his crib. So did Adam. After 20 min I took her out to put her outside and he was NOT happy...even standing at the door yelling at her to hurry up. He actually cried until I put them both back in there again.
He was hugging her and covering her up with his monkey blanket...finally though I took her out for good because I could tell she really had had enough. He was very upset, but eventually, got over it. It was cute at first but also very indicative of Adam's personality...he gets obsessive when he likes something!! Bailey is such a good sport with these kids.
